VO₂max calculator
Estimate your maximal oxygen uptake from a 12-minute run or a brisk one-mile walk. Both are classic field tests with published equations: all you need is a track or a measured route and a watch.

How to do each test
Cooper 12-minute run. Warm up, then cover as much distance as you can in exactly 12 minutes on a track or flat measured route, running steadily and walking if you must. Note the distance to the nearest 50 m. Kenneth Cooper's 1968 equation, (metres − 504.9) ÷ 44.73, came from comparing US Air Force men's field and treadmill results.
Rockport one-mile walk. Walk one mile as fast as you can without jogging, then take your heart rate immediately: read a chest strap, or count your pulse for 15 seconds and multiply by 4. Kline and colleagues (1987) built the equation from adults aged 30 to 69, using time, finishing heart rate, age, sex and weight.
VO₂max is the most oxygen your body can use, in millilitres per kilogram of body weight per minute. Dividing by 3.5 gives METs, multiples of resting energy use. Field tests are estimates: expect a lab test to differ by several mL/kg/min either way. Retest under the same conditions to track change.
Both tests are hard efforts. Not medical advice: if you are new to exercise or have a heart, lung or joint condition, talk to a doctor first, and stop if you feel chest pain, dizziness or unusual breathlessness.

Questions
Which test should I choose?
The 12-minute run suits people who already run and can pace an effort. The Rockport walk was designed for a wider range of fitness, including people for whom running is not an option.
What is a good VO₂max?
It depends strongly on age and sex, and on how it was measured. ACSM's Guidelines publish percentile tables from large lab-tested groups; compare with those rather than with one-size-fits-all labels. Your own number rising over months of training is the most useful comparison.
Can I do the test on a treadmill?
Both equations were built from track tests, so a treadmill result is rougher. If a treadmill is all you have, use the same setup every time you retest so the numbers stay comparable.
